Shovel Cave Sons Of The Forest Guide
Sons of the Forest challenges players with a brutal sandbox environment where gathering key items is crucial for survival. Among these tools, the shovel stands out as an essential asset for uncovering hidden bunkers and progressing through the main story. Navigating the treacherous cave system where this tool resides requires careful preparation and the right gear.
Prerequisites for Entering the Shovel Cave
Before you even attempt to venture into the shovel cave, you must secure two critical pieces of equipment found elsewhere on the island. You will need to obtain the rebreather to navigate deep underwater passages and the rope gun to utilize the ziplines inside the cavern. Attempting to enter without these items will result in a dead end, forcing you to backtrack through hostile territory.
It is also highly recommended to stock up on resources before starting your underground journey. Bringing ample ammunition, batteries for your flashlight, and healing supplies will significantly increase your chances of making it out alive. The subterranean corridors are heavily populated with aggressive mutant variants that can easily overwhelm an unprepared survivor.
Locating and Navigating the Cavern Entrance
The entrance to the shovel cave is located near the base of the snowy mountain range, typically recognizable by three impaled corpses near a small body of water. Once inside, you must immediately use your rope gun to cross a massive chasm using a pre-installed zipline. After dropping down, you will find a flooded pool where the rebreather becomes necessary to swim through a submerged tunnel.
The path forward is linear but filled with environmental hazards and narrow corridors packed with enemies. You will need to carefully manage your light sources to spot lurking mutants before they catch you by surprise. Keep moving deeper into the complex, following the natural flow of the water running through the stone chambers.
Claiming the Elusive Shovel and Escaping
After pushing through the deepest chambers of the cave, you will eventually reach a massive illuminated section where a deceased worker holds the shovel. Picking up this tool unlocks a wide array of options back on the surface, including the ability to dig up buried maintenance hatches. However, obtaining the tool is only half the battle, as the cave system shifts to challenge your escape.
As you turn back to exit, a massive mutant known as a sluggy will block your original path, requiring you to use explosives to clear the way out. This breakthrough opens up a new tunnel that leads back toward the island surface via a relatively safe corridor. Successfully navigating this exit route marks the completion of one of the most significant milestones in the game.
